Let your true colors shine

Spread the love

I’ll never forget the moment we got the call that my Grandfather died. It was December, I was 15, and I happened to be standing in the bathroom putting on the rainbow glitter eye shadow that he bought me a week earlier. All of a sudden a Cyndi Lauper song came on the radio that I’d never heard before, and the lyrics were “let your true colors shine.”

I turned over the container of eye shadow, and it said “True Colors” on the bottom.

I had no idea what the connection was, but felt like it must have been a message from my grandfather. It felt significant.

It wasn’t until years later that I’d fall in love with Cyndi Lauper and how her free spirit, lyrics, and style, would inspire my fashion designs. Today, as I’m dancing with my daughter in the kitchen, listening to the new version of True Colors on the Trolls Soundtrack, it all makes sense.

My grandfather always pushed me to try new things, (like vegetarian chopped liver), and he encouraged me to get up after I fell, (even the time I fainted in the hospital lobby… I can still here his voice yelling at me to get up!), and he always encouraged me to be my colorful crazy self un-apologetically.

It was amazing how someone who survived the Holocaust and the horrors of Aushwitz, after losing his parents and his brothers and sisters, could go on with such optimistic zest for life. I’ll never forget his silvery white hair, or how much he loved and took care of us even though we weren’t even related by blood.

He always looked forward, and that is how he was able to survive and live such a bright and colorful life after so much darkness.

Today, despite all the stress and tough stuff life brings, I work hard to find rainbows and push myself to try to just have fun and be myself and smile.

Through my work as a wedding dress designer, I make magical light up and rainbow wedding gowns, to encourage brides to take their day less seriously, enjoy the moment, be themselves, and sparkle while letting their true colors shine!!!

Here are the lyrics to True Colors by Cyndi Lauper.  By the way, if you are reading this, you should check out her incredible Fund (The True Colors Fund) that works to end homelessness among LGBTQ youth, creating a world where all young people can be their true selves.

You with the sad eyes
Don’t be discouraged,
Oh I realize
It’s hard to take courage
In a world full of people
You can lose sight of it all
The darkness inside you
Can make you feel so small
Show me a smile then
Don’t be unhappy
Can’t remember when
I last saw you laughing
This world makes you crazy
And you’ve taken all you can bear
Just, call me up
‘Cause I will always be there
And I see your true colors
Shining through
I see your true colors
And that’s why I love you
So don’t be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful
I see your true colors
Shining through (true colors)
I see your true colors
And that’s why I love you
So don’t be afraid to let them show
Your true colors
True colors are beautiful
Like a rainbow
Ooh ooh ooh like a rainbow

Thank you for the inspiration,

Evey aka Rainbow Light Bride
